Oxnard is actively advancing its strategies to support individuals experiencing homelessness by enhancing infrastructure and fostering community collaborations.
Expansion of the Oxnard Navigation Center
The City Council recently approved an amendment to the agreement with Mercy House Living Centers, increasing the contract budget by $96,215. This adjustment addresses additional insurance costs and temporary expenses due to construction delays, postponing the shelter’s relocation to a new facility until December 2025. Funding for these costs will come from a combination of Permanent Local Housing Allocation funds and a special state grant. The council’s decision underscores the city’s commitment to providing stable housing solutions for its vulnerable populations.
Development of Casa Aliento
In a significant move to offer permanent supportive housing, the former Vagabond Inn Motel is being transformed into Casa Aliento, a 70-unit affordable housing community. This project aims to provide permanent housing for extremely low-income individuals, homeless individuals, or those at risk of homelessness. The development includes amenities such as an outdoor dining area, garden boxes, a dog run, and a smoking area, creating a supportive environment for residents.
Community Engagement and Support
Oxnard’s approach to addressing homelessness extends beyond infrastructure. The city encourages residents to participate in cleanup efforts by reporting illegal encampments through the “Oxnard 311” app. Additionally, the Oxnard Police Department collaborates with organizations like Union Pacific Railroad to conduct enforcement operations, resulting in the removal of hazardous waste and debris from areas such as the 600 block of E. Fifth Street. These efforts aim to improve public safety and quality of life for all community members.
Through these initiatives, Oxnard demonstrates a comprehensive and compassionate approach to tackling homelessness, emphasizing both immediate relief and long-term solutions.
